What is Swine Flu? Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus. Swine flu regularly causes outbreaks in pigs but rarely affects humans. Occasionally there have been human infections of swine flu and in this current situation there is evidence of person-to-person transmission. What are the symptoms of Swine Flu?
Why should you be concerned? The swine flu is a new flu virus and people have little or no immunity. If this new flu virus begins to spread easily person-to-person, it could sweep across the country and around the world in a very short time. This would easily cause an influenza pandemic. What should I do if I think I am sick?
What can I do to prevent getting sick?

Swine Flu Update –April 28, 2009 at 7:10 pm Local Situation At this time, there is one probable case of swine flu in Santa Clara County, a 16 year old girl who was never hospitalized and is at home recovering. As a probable case, the Santa Clara County Public Health Lab ran a PCR test on the submitted specimen sample. The sample was subsequently identified as influenza A but “probable” swine flu and is being sent to CDC for confirmation. Currently, the Public Health Lab is testing or has tested a total of 34 specimens. The results of the tests are as follows:
With this probable case, the Health Officer has instructed public health nurses to begin contact investigation to determine who may have come in close contact with this person and exposed to the swine flu. These close contacts will be evaluated and appropriate action will be taken to limit the spread o this disease if determined to be necessary based on CDC guidelines.
