Kindergarten

Students eligible for Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year must have a Date of Birth between 9/2/2017 - 9/1/2018.  Kindergarten registration is ongoing for new students entering the District at any time after the initial enrollment period.

Students eligible for Kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year must have a Date of Birth between 9/2/2018 - 9/1/2019. The Kindergarten Online Registration process for the 2024-2025 school year will begin on January 8, 2024.

The potential for new kindergarten enrollment in some of the District's elementary schools may exceed the school's capacity so parents are encouraged to register their incoming kindergarten students as early as possible. Students are placed based on their registration date. Questions regarding Kindergarten enrollment may be directed to your school of residence. Additional information is available in the School Site Assignments and Overloads document.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

In the state of California, all 4-year-olds will eventually become eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK). Previously only children turning 5 years old between September 2nd to December 2nd were eligible for TK.

Starting in the 2022-2023 school year, TK eligibility expands from three to five months for birthdays between September 2, 2017, to February 2, 2018. By the 2025-26 school year, all 4-year-olds can attend TK in an elementary school in Berryessa Union School District. More information about Transitional Kindergarten is below.

Q. What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
A. TK is for students who are not age-appropriate to begin kindergarten. This was first dictated by the Kindergarten Readiness Act (2010) and then changed by AB 130 (2021). This legislation changed the birthday cut-off day for eligibility to begin kindergarten. Students affected by the changes are eligible to attend TK for one year. Then the following year the student would attend regular kindergarten.

Q. What is the birthday cut-off date for regular kindergarten?
A. A child who turns 5 years old on or before September 1 of that year attends regular Kindergarten.

Q. Is my child eligible to attend TK?
A. A child will be admitted into TK for the 2023-2024 school year if they have their 5th birthday between September 2 and June 2. See the chart below for the school year and when more birthday months become eligible.
School Year Birth Months Qualifying for TK
2022-2023 September 2, 2017 - February 2, 2018
2023-2024 September 2, 2018 - June 2, 2019
2024-2025 September 2, 2019 - June 2, 2020
2025-2026 September 2, 2020 - September 1, 2021
2026-2027 September 2, 2021 - September 1, 2022

Q. Is TK mandatory?
A. No. TK nor kindergarten is a mandatory grade. However, children who attend TK & Kindergarten are more likely to thrive in school academically and socio-emotionally as they enter 1st grade.

Q. How do I enroll my child in TK?
A. You enroll just like any other grade level through the Online Enrollment portal. Click here: to get started.

Q. Does it cost anything to enroll my child in TK?
A. No. There is no cost for students to attend TK.

Q. Will TK be offered at all elementary schools?
A. Currently TK is offered at Brooktree, Toyon, Ruskin, Majestic Way, Summerdale, Laneview, Northwood, and Vinci Park Elementary Schools. Additional locations may be open depending on enrollment numbers.

Q. Will the District provide transportation if TK is not at my home school?
A. No. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or caregiver.

Q. Is TK taught by a credentialed teacher?
A. Yes. TK teachers are fully credentialed just like all kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers. They also have additional authorization to teach younger children.

Q. How big will the class be?
A. Class size will be staffed at 22-1 in the 2023-2024 school year. There will also be an additional adult in the classroom to assist students.

Q. Can my child who is age-appropriate for regular kindergarten, go to TK instead?
A. No. They must attend kindergarten in accordance with the California State Education Code.

Q. Can my child who is age-appropriate for TK go to regular kindergarten instead?
A. It is not likely. They would have to go through an assessment process to determine if that is the best placement for them just like other students who are skipping a grade. This would only occur after the school year begins and the child turns 5 years old. Overall it is rare that children at any age are promoted to the next grade level.

Q. After attending the TK program what grade will my student attend the following year?
A. The TK program is the first year of a two-year Kindergarten experience. After completing a year of the TK program, a student would then attend a traditional kindergarten program at their home school. The TK program is designed for students who may benefit from an extra year of learning before entering a traditional kindergarten class.

Q. Is my child automatically enrolled in their home kindergarten school or do I need to enroll him/her again?
A. Your child is automatically enrolled in their home kindergarten school as long as you complete the school year. You do not need to enroll again.

Q. Can my child go to a different school for kindergarten after TK?
A. Possibly, if the TK school he or she attended is not your home school, he or she will automatically go back to his or her home school. If you do not wish for your child to go back to his or her home school, you may apply for Intra District Transfer to attend the TK school they attended or any of the other 10 elementary schools in BUSD. Entry to a different school (not your home school) is dependent upon space availability.
*The District strives to place TK students at a site nearest to their resident elementary school. If there is no space in one of our 6 TK classes, your child will be placed on a waiting list. You will be contacted as soon as a space becomes available.

Current Transitional Kindergarten Students

Current TK students do not have to re-enroll for kindergarten. Your TK student will be automatically enrolled for kindergarten at their resident home school. If you are interested in remaining at your TK school site, you MUST complete an Intra District Transfer request.

Intra District Transfers

Sierramont Middle School is closed for ALL transfers for the 2024-2025 school year. Transfers requesting Sierramont Middle School WILL NOT be accepted.

Transfers for Transitional Kindergarten WILL NOT be accepted. Students will be placed at the closest school site to your resident school location with space available.

*If there is a sibling at another school site please contact Sandra Koehler at skoehler@busd.net

*Inter & Intra District Transfer Request Forms are being accepted for Berryessa Union School District schools.

Parents of currently enrolled students may submit an "Intra District Transfer Request Form" to request that their child attend another school within the Berryessa Union School District that is not their resident home school. Transfer Request Forms are available at all school sites, at the District Office, and here.  Forms MUST be submitted directly to the Education Services Department at the District Office, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or via email to Sandra Koehler at skoehler@busd.net.

  • The Education Services Department shall conduct a computer lottery for Elementary School transfers to determine placement on a waiting list of all transfer requests. Families will be notified by mail of their waiting list number. Transfer requests for Middle Schools are based strictly on space availability. It is the Education Services Department's intention to conduct lotteries and notify families by June of the current school year. However, depending on new enrollment numbers, families may not be notified of approval or denial of transfer requests until mid-late summer. If you have questions regarding your transfer request, please contact Sandra Koehler at skoehler@busd.net.

*Intra District Transfer Request Forms for all new students (grades K-8th) for the

2024-2025 school year will be accepted starting January 8, 2024.

Families that have successfully completed the enrollment process and wish to have their child attend a school other than their resident home school may submit an "Intra District Transfer Request Form" at the time that they are submitting their completed 2024-2025 Student Enrollment packet. The Intra District Transfer Request Form will also be accepted at the District Office in the Education Services Department with proof of a completed Student Enrollment packet.

  • In late Spring/early Summer, the Education Services Department shall conduct a separate second lottery to determine placement on a waiting list of all transfer requests of newly enrolled students, and families will be notified by mail of their waiting list number. (Waiting list numbers are given to Elementary School requests only. Middle School requests are strictly based on space availability).

*Intra District Transfers are approved ONLY if space is available. Education Services will try to notify families as soon as possible if their transfer has been approved or denied. However, due to an unusually high number of "late" enrollments, families may not be notified of their transfer status until mid-late summer. If you have questions, please contact Sandra Koehler at skoehler@busd.net.

Inter-District Transfers

Sierramont Middle School is closed for ALL transfers for the 2024-2025 school year. Transfers requesting Sierramont Middle School WILL NOT be accepted.
