BUSD BOARD OF TRUSTEES ANNOUNCES NEW SUPERINTENDENT

Dr. Roxane Fuentes Brings 21 Years of Public Education Service

 

San Jose, CA August 23, 2017 – The Berryessa Union School District Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Roxane Fuentes as the district’s new superintendent, effective August 31, 2017, with a unanimous vote at its Board meeting on August 22, 2017. Dr. Fuentes succeeds Mr. Will H. Ector, Jr. who will retire on August 30, 2017 after six years of exemplary service as the district’s superintendent. Her appointment was the result of a nationwide search conducted by Educational Leadership Services.

A portrait of a smiling womanDr. Fuentes has 21 years of service in public education. She has served as an elementary teacher, instructional coach, and school principal. For the past five years as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services; Dr. Fuentes was involved in the development of K-12 instructional programs focused on curriculum development, student learning and achievement, leadership development and technology integration.

Dr. Fuentes has a strong background in the creation and implementation of comprehensive professional development and leadership programs for her district staff and parents. She has established multiple college and university partnerships to support a variety of educational programs and student mentorship. Her leadership has been recognized at the local, regional, state and national levels. She was the 2015 Los Angeles County Curriculum and Instruction Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators Region 18. 

“Dr. Fuentes impressed the Board with her compelling background in both student-focused project-based instruction and in the professional development and coaching of educators,” said Thelma Boac, School Board President. “We look forward to working together to continue the tradition of innovative learning in Berryessa.” 

Dr. Fuentes has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree in history from the California State University, Fullerton, a master’s degree in education from the California State University, Long Beach, and received her doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California in 2015. She grew up in Pico Rivera, California, the oldest of four daughters, and looks forward to moving closer to family who are longtime residents of the Bay area.

“I am excited and honored to have been chosen as the new superintendent of Berryessa Union and look forward to working collaboratively with the school board, staff, students, parents and community,” Dr. Fuentes said. “I was highly attracted to the diversity of the Berryessa community and I’m committed to providing all students with an enriching educational experience which will assist them in an ever-changing global society.

Berryessa Union School District is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, nestled against the northeast foothills in San Jose, California. The District serves a community of approximately 45,000 homes and has almost 8,100 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade. More than 800 certificated and classified Berryessa employees work daily at ten elementary schools and three middle schools as teachers, administrators, and other support staff.
